I did read that some people were buying 2.5" external drives, then removing the drive from the caddy and fitting it to the PS4. Worked perfectly and meant I didn't have to re-download game updates etc. The way I upgraded was to back up game saves to the cloud, backed up the entire PS4 to an external drive, swapped the drives over and installed the software from usb (Note: you need the full system software which is about 900mb, not just the latest update), then restored the backup. Like you I was put off the firecuda from the reliability reports, but in the end if i wanted 2tb there was no other choice other than a full SSD which are pretty expensive. I did find that the HGST Travelstar and good ratings for reliability and its a 7200rpm drive too, alas only available in 1tb size now. I upgraded to the firecuda 2tb drive a few weeks ago, when I started looking around there are very few 2tb 2.5" drives.
